Mary Beaven, LCSW
Virginia Commonwealth University
Master’s in Social Work
Mary is a Virginia native who has worked in the Fredericksburg area for many years. Mary received her bachelor’s degree in history from Virginia Tech, then used her degree to teach at a high school in Budapest, Hungary for two years. In a season of soul searching, Mary realized that her true passion was to help people, but not in the classroom. Using this knowledge, Mary pursued a master’s degree in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014. Prior to joining CIMA, Mary worked in the field of hospice and bereavement for eight years. Mary became a licensed clinical social worker in 2018 and has had the privilege of supervising undergraduate and graduate level social work students since that time.
Mary approaches her work with clients from a strengths-based, solution-focused paradigm, primarily utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Mary has experience with people living with mental health challenges, such as depression and anxiety, who are dealing with burnout or life stress, and specializes in working with both adult and adolescent clients who are bereaved. Often, Mary incorporates mindfulness and grounding techniques into client sessions to promote long-term wellness and coping.
In her free time, Mary enjoys spending time outside with her husband and daughter and can often be found cooking or baking treats for family and friends.
